Enabling Environment

Addressing the underlying barriers to sustainable commodity sectors at the national level

Ensuring that agricultural commodities are produced in a fair and sustainable way hinges on effective governance and an enabling environment.

Often barriers to sustainability arise from outdated or conflicting policies, laws and regulations governing fast-growing commodity sectors, which are driven by market demand often outside of the country. At the same time, weak monitoring and enforcement capabilities make it difficult to implement sustainability measures.

Building on the global UNDP mandate, GCP supports governments at all levels – ministerial, directorial and technical – to identify and start addressing these types of underlying barriers.

Identifying and engaging all stakeholders in resolving these types of barriers is critical for achieving change at a scale that makes a difference. For this reason, Multi-stakeholder Dialouge, including National Commodity Platforms, play a vital role in building consensus on needed reforms and ways forward.
