As part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) support to Iraq, technical assistance and capacity building has been provided to enhance the role of government institutions in socio-economic development and to contribute to improved governance practices.

In 2008, UNDP signed a long-term agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for Budget Execution Support (BES). Running through 2016, the project contributes to KRG’s efforts to develop more effective, accountable and transparent public financial management. BES has laid the foundations to accelerate stabilization, reconstruction and development in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I).
