The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) provides technical assistance and capacity building to the Government of Iraq, to enhance their role in socio-economic development and to contribute to improved governance practices.

The aim of the Local Area Development Programme (LADP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive social and economic development at the subnational level. Phase II of the programme was initiated by the end of 2012 with a contribution from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), followed by a financial contribution from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). LADP II promotes inclusive and participatory planning, budgeting and implementation practices to advocate the prioritization of development programmes, and provides focused technical assistance to the Governorates to improve essential service delivery.
