Strengthening Iraq’s Capacity for Sustainable Water Resources Management

Project Summary

The primary objective of the project is to assist the successful launch and functioning of the National Water Council (NWC) by supporting its establishment through an interim secretariat hosted by the Prime Minister Advisory Commission (PMAC) and establishing connections between the future council and international experts and institutions.

The project comprehends four outputs: (i) Interim Secretariat for the NWC and subsequently, the NWS itself are established; (ii) Capacity of the NWC’s internal water committee and external water committee strengthened; (iii) National Security Council’s (NSC) and parliament’s understanding of water governance and policy issues strengthened; (iv) Collaboration achieved among Iraqi institutions, academia, as well as relevant international water institutions.

What we have achieved so far

  • Inception workshop in Amman, Jordan, in September 2014
  • First Steering Committee meeting held in Baghdad in December 2014, and capacity development strategy to  establish the National Water Council
