UNDP and Government of Iraq commence missions to assess rule of law needs and challenges at provincial level

At the request of the Government of Iraq (GoI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been helping counterparts to reform the Security Sector and broader Rule of Law priorities in the country. In order to ensure the reform plans are robust and address both national and provincial level priorities, UNDP’s Rule of Law team undertook a field mission to Basra from 6 to 8 September 2016. Also represented were the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the Baghdad Security Sector Reform Civil Society Network.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is assisting the Government of Iraq (GoI) in its efforts on Security Sector Reform (SSR) through a well-established partnership with the Office of the National Security Advisor (ONSA). On 29 August, UNDP and ONSA co-chaired the first meeting between the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and international partners within the Civilian Policing Working Group, at Al Nahrain Centre for Strategic Studies in Baghdad.

Norway’s contributions to stabilization efforts in Iraq reach $10.7 million

The Kingdom of Norway has contributed an additional US$3 million to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization (FFIS), which finances fast-track initiatives in areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). With this contribution, Norway has channelled $10.7 million to UNDP's FFIS during 2016.

Human Rights Committee develops own strategy supported by UNDP and Iraq’s parliament

Developing a strategy, action plan, and Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) for the Human Rights Committee of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR) was the outcome of a 5-day workshop jointly organized, in Tunis on 24 to 28 July, by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the CoR. Participants were parliamentarians, advisers and technical staff of the Committee. The workshop was conducted under UNDP’s Strengthening Participatory and Accountable Governance programme (SPAG), funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
Parliamentarians capacitated on management of economic and financial crises and budgeting oversight

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a training workshop on the mechanisms of parliamentary discussions of the National Budget, on 24 to 27 July in Tunis. The training targeted 23 members of the Financial Committee, Financial Office and relevant committees on Budget and Financial analysis in Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR), in addition to members of the Financial and Economic Committees of Provincial Councils.
Twenty-six international donors pledge $2.1 billion to address Iraq crisis

Over $2 billion in new money has been pledged for the people of Iraq in response to Da’esh’s campaign of tyranny that has resulted in enormous suffering, deprivation, and devastation for the Iraqi people. To help address the grave conditions faced by those displaced in Iraq, the international community has surged forward to provide desperately needed humanitarian support such as food, water, and shelter for those in need, and to help create the conditions that will allow the safe and voluntary return of displaced families to liberated areas as quickly as possible. The foundations for long-term stability can be achieved if Iraq’s humanitarian crisis is alleviated and its citizens are able to return to their homes safely, with access to basic services, healthcare, and education, and hope for economic prosperity.
Hundreds of families to benefit from UNDP’s new partnership with Toyota Iraq

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Toyota Iraq signed a flagship agreement today in Erbil to train and place hundreds of displaced people in jobs. This new partnership brings together one of the world’s leading car companies, Toyota, and UNDP, which is actively working to improve conditions for the more than 3.4 million Iraqis who have been displaced by the conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Twenty-five deputy ministers sensitized on Results-Based Management and Budgeting

In support of the Government’s important reform agenda, the United Nations Development Programme brought together 25 deputy ministers to participate in a high-level workshop in mid-June in Amman to discuss result-based management and budgeting. The workshop was held under the patronage of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and supported by UNDP’s Public Sector Modernization (I-PSM) Programme.
