  • Iraqi Parliamentarians and NGOs explore models of diversity protection and anti-discrimination legislations in Eastern Europe Jun 17, 2017

    Sofia- From 13-17 June 2017, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a study tour and workshop in Sofia, Bulgaria, for a group of 11 Parliamentarians and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to explore models of diversity protection and anti-discrimination legislations in Eastern Europe, specifically in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Croatia. The study tour and workshop were part of the broader UNDP support for institutional reform and good governance in Iraq in line with government priorities and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 on building Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.

    Baghdad – The Government of Australia has contributed an additional US$1.5 million to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS), which finances fast-track initiatives in areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This brings Australia’s total contribution to FFS to almost US$3 million to date.

  • UNDP is supporting Iraq to establish a computerized integrated information sharing system for criminal justice May 11, 2017

    Baghdad – The fourth meeting of the Security Sector Reform (SSR) Criminal Justice Working Group (CJWG) was held on 11 May 2017 in Baghdad, co-chaired by Iraqi authorities and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The meeting focused on establishing an Integrated Criminal Justice Information Technology System (CJTS), identified as a high priority by a cross section of Government of Iraq security sector actors, including the High Judicial Council (HJC), Ministry of Interior (MoI) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ). This computerized information sharing system is crucial for streamlining criminal justice investigations between the HJC and MoI.

  • Japan contributes additional US$16.7 million to stabilization and resilience in Iraq May 7, 2017

    Baghdad - The Government of Japan has contributed an additional US$16.7 million to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) and Iraq Crisis Response and Resilience Programme (ICRRP) to promote stabilization, recovery, and resilience-building in areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and in areas with large displaced populations. This new funding brings Japan’s total contribution to FFS and ICRRP close to $60 million since 2014.

    Erbil – Iraq’s Ministry of Planning launched the first round of discussions on the National Development Plan of Iraq (NDP) 2018-2022. The three-day conference was jointly organized in Erbil by the Ministry of Planning and the Local Area Development Programme (LADP), a project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funded by the European Union (EU).

  • Government of Iraq and UNDP initiate 202 projects to accelerate the stabilization of Mosul Apr 19, 2017

    Baghdad- Building on dozens of projects already underway, the Government of Iraq today authorized UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) to initiate 202 more projects to accelerate the immediate stabilization of Mosul and greater Ninewa governorate.

  • National Consultations on Combating Corruption launched: Prime Minister calls upon all Iraqis to join the fight Apr 8, 2017

    Baghdad– Large-scale reforms in the procurement of goods and services in the health sector, and strong multi-pronged steps designed to stop massive evasion of customs revenues will be key to stamp out corruption in Iraq. This was one the top recommendations of the National Consultations on Combating Corruption in Iraq, launched in a workshop held in Baghdad on 06-08 April 2017.

  • Human Development Report 2016 launched: Youth and women amongst those being left behind as the Arab region develops Mar 21, 2017

    Stockholm- Despite significant progress in human development over the past 25 years, the Arab States region has, amongst developing regions of the world, the highest youth unemployment rate and the lowest share of primary school age children attending school. A stronger focus on youth and others excluded – particularly women and girls, rural dwellers, and those living in conflict-affected areas – is now needed to ensure sustainable human development for all.

    Sulaimaniyah- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a workshop over the period of 22-25 February 2017 in Sulaimaniyah to help capacitate staff of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR) on legal drafting and review. Titled Principles and Skills of Legislation Review, the workshop was funded by the Government of Denmark under UNDP’s Strengthening Participatory and Accountable Governance project (SPAG).

    Sulaimaniyah- Continuing support to strengthen the role of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) assisted the National Reconciliation, Accountability and Justice Committee to develop an integrated strategy for the current cycle (until 2018) including vision, mission and values. This was finalized during a workshop in Sulaimaniyah on 18-21 February 2017, jointly organized by UNDP’s Strengthening Participatory and Accountable Governance project (SPAG) and the CoR, and funded by the Government of Denmark.
