Baghdad– Large-scale reforms in the procurement of goods and services in the health sector, and strong multi-pronged steps designed to stop massive evasion of customs revenues will be key to stamp out corruption in Iraq. This was one the top recommendations of the National Consultations on Combating Corruption in Iraq, launched in a workshop held in Baghdad on 06-08 April 2017.

A stronger focus on youth and others excluded – particularly women and girls, rural dwellers, and those living in conflict-affected areas – is now needed to ensure sustainable human development for all.

Iraq’s parliamentary National Reconciliation, Accountability and Justice Committee develops a two-year strategy

Sulaimaniyah- Continuing support to strengthen the role of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) assisted the National Reconciliation, Accountability and Justice Committee to develop an integrated strategy for the current cycle (until 2018) including vision, mission and values. This was finalized during a workshop in Sulaimaniyah on 18-21 February 2017, jointly organized by UNDP’s Strengthening Participatory and Accountable Governance project (SPAG) and the CoR, and funded by the Government of Denmark.

Erbil- The Kingdom of the Netherlands is contributing nearly US$270,000 (€250,000) towards the implementation of the Economic Reform Roadmap, developed by the World Bank in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I). The contribution is made under the Funding Facility for Economic Reform (FFER KR-I), jointly launched by the Ministry of Planning and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) late September 2016.
Advancing gender mainstreaming for sustainable environmental management in Iraq

Baghdad- In collaboration with the Government of Iraq (GoI) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has organized a technical workshop with the objective of discussing and improving understanding of gender mainstreaming in environment projects in Iraq. Held on 13 February 2017 in Baghdad, the workshop was attended by twenty-four gender focal points from various ministries including Health and Environment, Water Resources, Electricity, Defence, Interior, and Culture, in addition to officials from the KRG’s Environmental Protection and Improvement Board (EPIB).
Iraq prepares to curb greenhouse gas emissions through development of a roadmap for mitigation action

Erbil- A total of 27 Iraqi experts and officials discussed and agreed on an outline for Iraq’s actions towards mitigating the cause of climate change that will lead to the finalization of the country’s Roadmap for Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA). This outline was the outcome of a technical consultation meeting organized in Erbil by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Health and Environment (MoHE), over the period of 10-11 February 2017.

Baghdad- Within its continuing efforts to address sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) in Iraq, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) conducted a workshop on 9 February 2017 at Al Nahrain Centre for Strategic Studies in Baghdad, titled Advancing Understanding of SGBV to Enhance Response. This was the second workshop on the topic UNDP’s Rule of Law Programme facilitated for the staff of its legal aid implementing partner, Dar Al-Khibra Organization (DKO).
Iraq’s Ministry of Interior starts planning for institutional level reforms

Baghdad- Informed by the Government of Iraq's ongoing security sector reform efforts and the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Law 20 (2016), the Ministry initiated an assessment and planning process for its institutional level reforms, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Law 20 provides the Ministry with the legal basis for such reforms, and focuses on key areas, such as consolidating public order, protecting people's lives, liberties and property against all threats, crime prevention, combating all forms of terrorism, and taking legal action against perpetrators.
