    The Kingdom of Norway has contributed an additional US$3 million to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization (FFIS), which finances fast-track initiatives in areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). With this contribution, Norway has channelled $10.7 million to UNDP's FFIS during 2016.

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Governorate of Sulaimaniyah signed an agreement to rehabilitate the main water network for Sulaimaniyah City which provides safe drinking water for more than one million people.

  • Human Rights Committee develops own strategy supported by UNDP and Iraq’s parliament Jul 28, 2016

    Developing a strategy, action plan, and Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) for the Human Rights Committee of Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR) was the outcome of a 5-day workshop jointly organized, in Tunis on 24 to 28 July, by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the CoR. Participants were parliamentarians, advisers and technical staff of the Committee. The workshop was conducted under UNDP’s Strengthening Participatory and Accountable Governance programme (SPAG), funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a training workshop on the mechanisms of parliamentary discussions of the National Budget, on 24 to 27 July in Tunis. The training targeted 23 members of the Financial Committee, Financial Office and relevant committees on Budget and Financial analysis in Iraq’s Council of Representatives (CoR), in addition to members of the Financial and Economic Committees of Provincial Councils.

    Over $2 billion in new money has been pledged for the people of Iraq in response to Da’esh’s campaign of tyranny that has resulted in enormous suffering, deprivation, and devastation for the Iraqi people. To help address the grave conditions faced by those displaced in Iraq, the international community has surged forward to provide desperately needed humanitarian support such as food, water, and shelter for those in need, and to help create the conditions that will allow the safe and voluntary return of displaced families to liberated areas as quickly as possible. The foundations for long-term stability can be achieved if Iraq’s humanitarian crisis is alleviated and its citizens are able to return to their homes safely, with access to basic services, healthcare, and education, and hope for economic prosperity.

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Toyota Iraq signed a flagship agreement today in Erbil to train and place hundreds of displaced people in jobs. This new partnership brings together one of the world’s leading car companies, Toyota, and UNDP, which is actively working to improve conditions for the more than 3.4 million Iraqis who have been displaced by the conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

  • EU funded cleaning campaign collects more than 2,500 tonnes of garbage from Kurdistan Region of Iraq Jun 16, 2016

    More than 2,500 tonnes of garbage were collected yesterday from the Governorates of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq- Erbil, Sulaimaniyah, Duhok and Halabja- as a result of the Let us Clean Kurdistan in One-Day campaign funded by the European Union. With the objective of raising awareness on conservation of the environment, the campaign was supported by UNDP’s EU Local Area Development Programme (LADP), and organized by the Ministry of Municipality and Tourism of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Kurdistan Region Governorates, in collaboration with Clean Organization Environment Friends (COEF).

  • UNDP partners with a Canadian non-profit institution to advance Iraq’s crises management ability Jun 12, 2016

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Canadian non-profit Institute on Governance (IoG) signed a partnership agreement in Baghdad that aims at advancing Iraq’s crises management ability. Accordingly, UNDP will support IoG to implement Fiscal Federalism, Decentralization and Resilience Building Project, a joint effort to help Iraq to become a stable, federal democracy with sustainable economic growth.

  • Italy provides additional funding to stabilization activities in liberated areas Jun 5, 2016

    The Italian Republic is contributing an additional US$4.91 million (€4.5 million) to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization (FFIS), which finances fast-track initiatives in areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This follows a contribution of $2.72 million (€2.5 million) in December 2015, and brings the total funds channeled through the Italian Agency for International Cooperation (AICS) to $7.63 million (€7 million).

    As part of its support to the Government of Iraq to facilitate effective and efficient access to quality and responsive government services for citizens, UNDP Iraq's Public Sector Modernization (I-PSM) Programme conducted a 5-day workshop on Simplification of Work Systems, Procedures and Service Delivery Models at National and Sub-national Levels. Organized in Amman, this second round in a series of capacity development workshops was built on results achieved in workshops held in October 2015.

    The Governorate of Duhok launched its Provincial Development Strategy 2016-2018 in a ceremony organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union (EU), and NOREL non-governmental organization. Conceptualized with the support of UNDP’s EU funded Local Area Development Programme (LADP), the Strategy seeks progress in six areas: Multi-sector economy, geographical location, governmental services, investment environment, administrative and financial efficiency, and human resources.

    The Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) convened a two-day conference on 17 and18 May in Erbil, bringing together more than 60 representatives of government institutions and offices. Initiated by the JCC and endorsed by the Council of Ministers, the conference consolidated action priorities to improve coordination, build domestic expertise and enhance efficiency in resource mobilization and utilization for effective crises management and emergency response.

  • More volunteers trained to support EU/UNDP’s Innovation for Development Initiative May 13, 2016

    Under the Local Area Development Programme (LADP) funded by the European Union (EU), a volunteers’ training and introduction workshop on Innovation for Development has been organized over the period of 11 to 13 May in Erbil. The initiative implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) promotes business and social entrepreneurship through methods such as Design Thinking and the Business Model Canvas in order to familiarize young entrepreneurs with these concepts and their applications.
