Workshop prioritizes initiatives of the Government Programme to feed into annual work planningFeb 18, 2016
Baghdad - A two-day workshop held on 17 and 18 February in Baghdad has identified criteria for prioritizing initiatives under the six pillars of Iraq’s Government Programme (2014-2018). The Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Office organized the event, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
UNDP Country Director, Mr. Adam Abdelmoula, stated in his opening remarks: “Our support to the Government has gone beyond technical backing of this process to reach other areas prioritized by national institutions, including performance management, enhancing institutional readiness in monitoring and evaluation for development, public sector reform, exports increase, and border control; to mention a few.”
In turn, Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff and Chair of the National Programme’s Steering Committee, Mr. Mahdi al-Allaq, said: “We acknowledge the support Iraq has been receiving from UNDP in the past years, including in public sector modernization, state empowerment and other major areas.” He underscored: “It is time for serious steps in this direction, especially with the great plunge in oil prices and the drop of oil revenues. We need to address matters more seriously and with apprehensible will.”
Facilitated by UNDP Iraq’s Public Sector Modernization (I-PSM) Programme, subject matter experts from different public sector institutions thoroughly discussed different options and criteria for the prioritization process. Consensus was reached to prioritize the Government Programme initiatives per pillar. Those include: secure and stable Iraq, upgrading living standards and provision of services to citizens, encouraging transition to private sector, increasing the production of oil and gas to improve financial sustainability, conducting administrative and financial reform in governmental institutions, and regulating federal-local relations.
Formulating essential input to the selection of projects, the workshop results will feed into the upcoming Government Annual Work Plan.Contact
