Peace Weekend in NajafMar 15, 2017
Najaf- Youth are drivers of change in Iraq. A Peace Weekend has been organized in Najaf on 10-11 March 2017, with the support of UNDP’s Iraq Crisis Response and Resilience Programme (ICRRP) and generous funding from the Government of Germany.
After successful completion of a training on conflict analysis, community reconciliation and facilitation skills, youth from Najaf, Baghdad and Ninewah have organized a series of events to promote inter-ethnic coexistence and tolerance amongst displaced people, host community and non-Muslim minorities in Najaf. The Peace Weekend included dialogue sessions amongst different ethnic and religious groups at Kufa University, social cohesion activities for displaced children, and a peace conference for hundreds of people in Najaf.
A strong partnership with academic institutions and civil society is key to mobilize youth. UNDP is proud to work with Kufa University, Iraqi Al Amal Association, Imam Al-Khoei Foundation, and Eastern Mennonite University-Centre for Justice and Peacebuilding to empower youth in Iraq.
