OUR FOCUS

Crisis Prevention and Recovery

Overview

UNDP has led the early recovery and resilience agenda in Iraq since 2014/2015, supporting the Government of Iraq’s crisis response efforts, through the Iraq Crisis Response and Resilience Programme (ICRRP).

Resting on the idea of “build back better”, ICRRP uses the opportunity of restoration and recovery to shape a sustainable environment and equip communities to better manage future crises.

What ICRRP has achieved so far (2014-2019)

  • 9 million+ people benefitting from enhanced provision of basic services, including electricity, water, health, education and roads infrastructure;
  • 20,476 people benefitted from cash-for-work opportunities;
  • 10,881 IDPs and refugees including survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, received legal support in the KRI and Baghdad;
  • 2,515 religious’ leaders engaged in awareness sessions on coexistence, tolerance and peacebuilding;
  • 7 Community Centres established, implementing community-based activities for over 4,500 community members;
  • Promotion of Peace Education within the higher education system in Iraq:
  1. Developed the first national Diploma for Peace and Conflict Studies with the endorsement of the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research;
  2. Developed the first Arabic Peace Lexicon with 263 key terms relating to peace and conflict;
  3. Trained 108 academics (35 women) on peacebuilding skills, conflict analysis and reconciliation.
