Local Development

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been promoting local development in Iraq to help restore the citizens’ confidence in the Government and its institutions through effective governance, delivery of basic services, planning, budgeting and decision making processes that reflect the needs and priorities of vulnerable people.

To ensure effective service delivery and monitoring at the local level, UNDP is promoting participatory mechanisms for citizens’ voice in local development decision making, participatory planning systems and capacity development for effective community engagement for the implementation of decentralization frameworks. This support will also contribute to improving data quality and availability for mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in national and local planning processes.

UNDP works closely with the regional innovation hub to design innovative governance interventions that integrate gender, youth and SDGs and promote public-private partnerships in the delivery of social services.
