Resting on the idea of “build forward better”, UNDP’s stabilization efforts focus on rehabilitation and recovery, addressing vulnerabilities, building resilience to future crises and laying the foundation for a transition towards sustainable development. This is achieved through programming funded under two core projects – the Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS) and the Iraq Crisis Response and Resilience Programme (ICRRP).

Together, these projects ensure the safe return of displaced people to their place of origin and continued security in areas of high displacement. Through holistic programming, UNDP rehabilitates essential services and homes, supports skills development and employment and engages the community in decision-making, to ensure the recovery process is driven by – and addresses the needs of – Iraqi communities.

UNDP also supports vulnerable people in areas suffering from limited resources as a result of natural or other disasters – such as acute pollution, with a view to ensure every Iraqi has safe access to water, electricity, health, education, free movement on sealed roads and civil/municipal services; and the opportunity to support their family financially. This investment in critical services sets the stage for long-term rehabilitation and development activities.

UNDP supports communities by:

  • Rehabilitating critical infrastructure, including schools, health care centers and hospitals, electricity, water and sewerage networks and roads;
  • Rehabilitating housing, public parks and municipal services (including mayoral offices and civil service facilities);
  • Building the capacity of the Government of Iraq to deliver quality community services;
  • Creating immediate income opportunities through cash-for-work;
  • Supporting skills development and growth through vocational and employability training, apprenticeships and on-the-job training;
  • Supporting long-term employment opportunities through small business grants and job placement;
  • Engaging communities to ensure ownership and sustainability of recovery efforts.
