International Refugee Day: Hadiya and Suleiman finally together

Qushtapa camp, 20 June 2019- The International Refugee Day was marked on 20 June 2019 with the wedding of Syrian refugee couple Hadiya and Suleiman at Qushtapa camp near Erbil, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The ceremony was co-financed by UNDP’s Headway Programme, funded by the European Union’s Regional Trust Fund, MADAD and Helly Luv, a well-known local singer, influencer and owner of a hair salon.

Helly Luv is an example of a private business that is not only hiring Syrian refugees, but also feels the need to give back to society more. In addition to wedding preparations, she provided training to 6 refugee women to deliver these services to camp residents and created jobs and income for 6 households.

This partnership showcases the important role of local private businesses in generating jobs for refugees, leading to successful long-term solutions and decreasing the burden on local authorities.
